Ensure your new home stays dry and damage-free. Discover 6 often-overlooked waterproofing spots in new construction that are critical for long-term protection.

Hey there, home lovers! It’s your friendly neighborhood mascot, Blobby from Neo by Nippon. In this blog, I’m going to help you protect your lovely new home from one of its biggest invisible enemies: water.
Water might seem harmless after all, it’s necessary for our livelihood, but trust me, when it sneaks into the wrong corners of your house, it can be a total nightmare. Damp patches on the walls, flaking paint, musty smells... yikes! It can take you from 'Aiii' in excitement to 'ayyayo' in seconds.
So if you’re building a new house or just moved into one, I’m here to help you avoid the most commonly missed waterproofing areas in home construction. Let’s dive into the 6 waterproofing hotspots you absolutely shouldn’t ignore. Ready?
Bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms are where water flows freely and sometimes, sneakily. These areas need serious protection because water from sinks and showers can seep into the floors and walls. That may not sound like much now, but over time it leads to mould, stains, and peeling paint.
What should you do? Waterproof the floor and also pay extra attention to joints, drains, and pipe areas.
Your terrace isn't just a place for evening tea or sunrise yoga. It's also the area that takes the full hit from the sun, rain, and changing weather.
Flat roof slabs are especially tricky because they can hold stagnant water if they’re not sloped properly. This water slowly starts leaking into the structure, leading to bubbling paint, damp ceilings, and ceiling cracks.
To prevent this, apply an Elastomeric coating on your terrace. And also make sure the surface has a slight slope so water drains off quickly. Trust me, your terrace will thank you later, and so will your downstairs ceiling.
Your outer walls are like your house’s raincoat. But even the best raincoat won’t work if it has holes in it!
External walls face a lot of moisture from rain, humidity, and sometimes even rising groundwater. If you skip waterproofing here, water starts to seep in, and your gorgeous paint job starts flaking in no time.
That’s why we recommend breathable waterproof paint like our hydroshield paint that blocks outside moisture while still allowing inner walls to “breathe” and release trapped vapour. This keeps your walls looking fresh and clean for years. A priority for new home waterproofing.
Be it ghosts in Hollywood movies or water from rain, they all have a thing for basements. If your home has a basement, listen closely because water really, really loves underground spaces. Basement walls and floors are in constant contact with soil moisture. Over time, this causes damp patches, white salt-like marks (that’s called efflorescence), and even a musty smell.
To fight this, use a waterproofing compound on both the inside and outside of your basement walls. Also, include a drainage system around the foundation. It’s one of the most essential waterproofing steps for new builds, and often forgotten!
These may look cute and harmless, but they’re secretly high-risk zones for water trouble. Balconies are exposed to rainfall, and planter boxes hold moisture-rich soil. Without proper slope and protection, water starts seeping through floors and into adjacent rooms.
Waterproof membranes under your balcony tiles and a well-designed drainage slope are both musts. Planter boxes should have internal linings and overflow outlets. Many people miss this step and end up dealing with balcony leaks, one of the classic waterproofing mistakes to avoid during home construction.
Where there’s stored water, there’s a risk of leakage. That includes both your rooftop tanks and underground sumps.
Leaks from water tanks don’t just waste water, they cause damage to ceilings, walls, and in some cases, structural concrete.
The fix? Use waterproofing coatings inside tanks and flexible cement-based membranes outside. Regular checks and maintenance go a long way in preventing water damage in new construction homes.
Waterproofing isn’t a “nice-to-have”; it’s a non-negotiable step if you want your home to stay strong and beautiful for years to come. From top to bottom, inside and out, I’ve seen what happens when water isn’t stopped in time. So let’s get it right from day one!
